At the end of 2024, a Chinese factory announced its successful unlocking of the key to synthesizing L-astaxanthin using yeast, based on gene editing and fine fermentation engineering technologies. This innovation holds significant importance for promoting sustainable development in the industry.

Traditional astaxanthin, whether obtained through chemical synthesis or produced by red yeast fermentation, exhibits low biological activity. In contrast, the L-astaxanthin, due to its unique structure, demonstrates high biological activity, utilization rate, and antioxidant properties, making it widely applicable in aquaculture feed, food supplement, cosmetic and other fields.

The Chinese factory is leveraging its three major synthetic biotechnology platforms, has spent 20 months developing L-astaxanthin with high purity, high content, and efficient production. Its purity far exceeds the industry standard, while production efficiency has increased by 120 to 300 times, and costs have been reduced by more than half, making high-quality astaxanthin more affordable.

This technological breakthrough not only enhances the performance of astaxanthin but also reduces costs, bringing more competitive products to the market and contributing to the green development of the industry.
